Context.

my task.

my task is to make an infographic based on what ever i want, My infographic is going to be about the different types of safety devices that can be found on roller coasters.

to make thus infographic i plan to use 3DSmax to make and animate the models i will use 3DSmax to render the infographic.

My brief.

I have looked over the brief and found requirements for textures, lighting and animation sequence that I will need to go over in this project.

​

requirements for the textures are that I need to unwrap two of my 3D models. This is not much of a problem for me because I have unwrapped a lot of 3D models in the past, Because I don't have after effects I will be making my infographic in 3DS max I will be unwrap all of the model that will be in the scene.

​

requirements for the lighting are that their must be at least one light on each model. Setting up lights in 3DS max is something I have done in the past, I have not had much experience with setting up lighting, The main problems I have had in the past is having the image come out too bright or too dark. This will be a good learning experience.

​

requirements for the animation sequence are that it must be 30 second long. 30 seconds of animation is a long time but with my plans I may have to make it longer. I have made some animations that are longer then 30 second long, so the time frame should not be much of a problem. The only problems I can think of is rendering, it could take a long time.

​

In my brief it only says that I need to make a 30 second infographic that has two 3D model, because I get to choose the theme of my infographic I got full control of what a make. I have chosen the theme of roller coaster anti roll back, In this project I will make two different type of anti roll back. with all of the over requirement and the fact that I can't use after effect all of the requirements should be completed as I make it.

What models will I need to make for my theme?

The main models I will need to make are the roller coaster car, chain lift and launch track.

when making the roller coaster car I will need to design it so that that could run on the same type of track. I can set it up so that I will only need to change out the under side of the track.

In the past I worked on a launch track model in my free time, I plan to use this model in my infographic. I can use some parts from my launch track model.

The lift hill model, when I make the lift hill model I will tack some part from my launch track as well as the line tool. From the launch track model I will use the peace of track used to connect the rail to the spine of the track.

with all 3 of these models I will have the main prats of the infographic, The only over models I will need to make would be would need to make would be for would building, I would need to make models of buildings and fence and a floor.

This infographic is from the YouTube channel Kurzgesagt. This infographic is about what would happen if a nuke went of on the moon.

 

The infographic goes into a lot of detail of what would happen if a nuke was used on the moon. I like the animations style used in the video. From what I have seen I looks like it was made using adobe illustrator and after effects to make the infographic. I like how the infographic no blocks of text, instead the infographic has a narrator who talks about what is going on. 

Because I am doing my infographic in 3DS max I will not be using the same time of art style, but the main things I have taken way from looking at this infographic is how they display all the information to the viewer.

Some of the key things that I want to be in my infographic that I found in the video are the bright colors, the upbeat theme and how it is keeped fun as facts are given to the viewer.

This infographic is from the YouTube channel Jared Owen. This infographic is about how a nerf gun works.

This infographic show how a nerf gun works, The infographic uses a 3D model of the gun that is super high detail. As the infographic plays the model of the gun will open up to show you the inner workings of the toy. The infographic has a narrator, the narrator will talk about what each part of the toy dose and how it interacts with the over parts.

This infographic uses 3D models this will be a good infographic to look at because it uses 3D models just like my infographic will. For my infographic I will be showing how roller coaster anti-rollback works, this infographic dose the same thing. The infographic dose not have much on lighting setup, this mean that it is not good for insulation.

What are the The 12 Principles of Disney. 
Squash and Stretch 
Squash and Stretch is used to think about how an object will change shape when it travels or hits something. For example, what would happen to a ball if you where you jumped on it.

Anticipation 
Anticipation is used to prepare the viewer for what's about to happen to something. For example, the movement that would happen before you jump where you move down low to then spring up.

Staging 
Staging is used to draw attention to something. This is often used to make you look at something that may be important or to make you look at two people who are talking. 
 
 

 


 
 
 
 
Straight Ahead Action & Pose to Pose 
Straight Ahead Action & Pose to Pose is used to setup a time line of how a object will change shape. Pose to Pose is best used for an object that has a start point and end point because you just setup the key position then fill in all the gaps. Straight Ahead Action is where you do all the frames on after another with out leaving gaps to fill in laghtor. 
 
 

 


 
 
 
 
Follow Through and Overlapping Action 
Follow Through and Overlapping Action is used when a secondary object. For example, the movement of hair off clothes when walking.

Ease in and Ease Out 
Ease in and Ease Out is used when a object is starting to pick up speed starting slow and ending fast. For example, this can be used in cars as they speed up to get to their top speed.

Arc 
Arc is used to show gravity when an object has been throne. For example, this can be use when any object is throne, the path the  object will take will arc shaped because of gravity. 
 
 
 

 


 
 
Secondary Action 
Secondary actions are used to support the main action going on in an animation. For exsample if some was going to pick up a box then they could do something with there hand before as a Secondary Action. 
 
 
 

 


 

Timing 
Timing is used to set the speed of a moving object. This is most often done by changing the number of frames used to get from point A to B. 
 
 


 

 


 
Exaggeration 
Exaggeration is used to keep an animation interesting. It is often used to make a villain look more evil or make a hero look better. 
 
 

 


 
 
 
Solid Drawing 
Solid Drawing can be used for perspective and drawing in 3D. This is used to make a 2D person that looks like they could be in a 3D world. 
 
 
 
 

 


  
Appeal 
Appeal is used to keep the object interested in the animation. For example, making a prize look like something that you want. 

The different types of animation. 

Animation 2D. 
When animating in 2D you need to draw each frame one at a time, each frame then could be placed layer by layer to create the full frame. When animating in 2D was just starting out they would hand draw frames on to plastic to make a layer. Now that we have digital images it can all be done on a pc. 
 
Layers. 
In the beginning the layer was created on paper and the traced on to a plastic of plastic screen. The screen was then sent to get painted. After that the layer was placed Infront of a Camra with over frame before a photo was taken. 
 
Now layers are built on a pc, with frames on a pc it saves a lot of time you can also make some adjustments to each frame. With all the frames on a PC it means all the frames can be kept in same place this means that if a frame get lost it will need to be remade. 
 
Frame by frame animating is where you create the full frame all at once, this was used when the first animations were made. It is still used today for animated storyboards. when drawing out each frame animator would trace over the last frame. 
 
animation 3D. 
When it comes to 3D animation there are to driftnet way to animate, when animating objects, it is a simple case of moving the object around. When it comes to people or animals a bone rig is used, the bones will be placed in the same places as the animal. 
 
Animating an object 
When animating an object there be a small bit of rigging, for ensample car wheels will be connected to a car. When rigging a car there would not be any bones used, intended objects like the wheels would be linked to the car. 
 
Animating an animal 
When animating an animal a bone rig will be made. The bone rig is then connected to the model of the animal, each bone will have an area of the model that it can move. To animate a animal an animator would have to move each bone to the right spot before moving to the next pose. 

how 3D is used/history.

The first 3D models where made and used by engineers. The engineers would use the model to create something in real life.  
In the beginning engineers used the models, at this time some university computer science where also using 3D models to see what they could do. One of the first thing made was a computer animated hand made in 1971. 
Jim Blinn was the first person used Catmull's texture-mapping algorithm to put the first texture onto a 3D model. At the time they could not see the textured model in real time so it could not be used in games. 
the first 3D game was Battlezone it was made in 1980. It was a simple game where you drove around in tanks shooting over tanks. The game models were rendered as wireframes, this means that you could only see the line lines that made the model.

Over time as more people from creative increase started to play around with making models and animations some companies that started to make more types of 3D modeling software, in 1995 sketchpad was release as a consumer modeling software. From this point everybody could make models and as technology got better the model could be made better and faster.

The different ways to make models. 
When making a model there are different techniques that can be used polygon modeling, spline modeling and nurbs modeling. 
 
polygon modeling. polygon modeling uses shapes that are connected. When these models are made only a shell of what is made, this is so that it can be rendered in real time. 
 
spline modeling. Spline modeling uses a spline, the spline is a line that is used. The line is then used to create a model, to create the model the spline is copped around a point then lines are added to connect the splines. 
 
nurbs modeling. Non-uniform rational basis spline is like uses two splines to make a model. This is often used to create . 

Animation constraints.

Animation constraints are used to make a model move in a certain way and stop the model from moving in over ways. The constraints I will be looking at are the path constraints, the look at constraints, the axis constraints and the position constraints. 
 
The path constraints uses a path, the path is made by using the line tool. When setting up the path constraints you will need to click on a line, after doing this the object will be put on the line and will only move on that line. You can then set key points for the object to move to. 
 
The look at constraints will make an object look at a target, the object will use it’s pivot point as its center. After setting the target the object will always look at it, it is often used to make bone in a model look at a place. 
 
The position constraints is used to connect objects, when a object is is moved a object linked by a position constraint will move in the same direction. This is good for objects like boxes that get picked up. 
 

Key considerations. 

For my key considerations I am looking at the models used In Pokémon. 

realism vs stylized. 

The models used in Pokémon games have a cartoon style to go with the game. The games are targeted at young children, this is why they go for a cartoon style. 

In the detective Pikachu movie they use a realistic style for the Pokémon, this is because the movie is live action. 

 

Pre-render or real-time render. 

 With Pokémon games the newer games use real-time rendering, with the real-time rendering it means that the Camra can be moved around the battle, it also means that all of the battle effects and battle moves the Pokémon do car be showmen in more detail. 

In the older games they used Pre-render sprites. In the first game the sprites where made by hand on a pc. when the first 3d Pokémon games came out the Pokémon in battle where prerender sprites that were made using the models. 

 

Future proofing by using non-destructive modelling . 

When the first Pokémon games where made in 3D high detail models where made, the Pokémon models are used in multiple games, the same Pikachu model was used in Pokémon go, let's go Pikachu/Eevee and sword and shield. With this type of set up of the Pokémon models they can be used in more places, like promotional videos as well as cross over gams such as super smash bros. 

 

Pre-existing rig. 

With the Pokémon game they reuse the Pokémon models all of these models have Pre-existing rig built in. 

When it comes to trainer you meat and battle, they use a human rig that they put on the model. 

When it comes to making new Pokémon for a games, they must make a bone rig for it. These new Pokémon with their rigs will be used in the next Pokémon game.
