What is multi camera production.

The principles of multi camera.

What is multi camera production?

Multi camera productions are where you have more than one camera recording at the same time, the main point of this is to get the same shot from different angles and change camera angles live with out having to move the camera.

Methods used for different multicamera productions?

The different multicamera production I will be comparing is live news and live sports. (add a what, why and is it good)

The studio set up can be broken into two areas virtual studio and real studio. A virtual studio is a studio built in a pc and added in using green screen, this is mainly used for low budget productions or productions that only need a studio for a short time. Virtual studio are best used for sports events because sports events only last a couple of weeks meaning that it would cost too much to build a studio and then only one production can use the studio space meaning that you would need more space that would just end up sitting empty costing money.
Real studios use the same space to build spaces so that they don't have to build it in a pc, meaning they are hard to move and are mainly used for permanent productions or supper high budget productions where they want lost of space. The real studios can cost a lot more then the virtual studios but if something goes wrong with the virtual studio for example if the pc running the virtual studio crashes or brakes then you will have problems getting it back but on a real studio you will not have that problem meaning that as long as the pc's running the broadcast don't go down then you can always be ready, which is perfect for important for live news where they need to go live at any time.

There are not too many distinct camera setup used in camera productions, I have found two distinct camera setup one is for sports and the over is for tv studio shows. Sports events camera all over the place, they have a camera on each scoring area as well as a bunch of cameras watching the action and sometimes they will have cameras watching people on the side lines for reaction shots. Live sports events need lots of cameras to capture all the action because they not acting and there is no redo because they are competing in a tournament and you can't interrupted them. Having all the cameras can cost a lot more and take lots of time to set up but it is worth it to capture all the action from all angles with out interrupted as well as getting action replay shots.
Studio camera setups have a smaller amount of cameras to cover a smaller amount of action. Studio camera have less areas where they are need. some of the areas cameras would be needed are on a presenters desk, on a green screen, interactive screen or on guests area. With such a small space it seems like it would make sense to use one camera but by using more then one camera you can cut between them with out having to move them and if you don't have to move the camera there is no extra setup also if you have to move the camera you need to stop move and restart. Using more then one camera in a studio you can cut to different areas of the studio, this is good because you can speed moving around the studio with out much set up and moving around.

There are not may different styles for multicam productions, the main difference would be for what you are filming for example with sports you may need to cut to different areas supper fast or replay a clip when there is no sporting action. The over style I found as for news and tv shows like it, this style is less about trying to keep you attention on something and more about giving you information in a way you can under stand. The styles have one big difference that can be found, this is scripting, on live sports you can't script any thing over then the coming ups and introductions the rest is just reacting live to an event going on in front of them. On live news they can script every thing because it is not random and they have topic to talk about the only time this changes is when a big event happens and they need to report on it immediately.

We use camera setups because we can use it to get every angle and move to different areas instantly.

Legal and ethical considerations for a multi camera production.

The duty of care is important for the guests, you can not bring someone on and make them look bad because this could ruin the mental health and you don’t want people coming up to them in the street to attack them because you made them look bad in public TV. You will also need to tell the guest if they are going on live or pre-recorded so they know how to act and if there are any retakes.

Health and safety sound similar to duty of care but it is more about is this safe to use, for example is there anybody in a danger area and what can we do to keep it safe when it is being setup. An important part of health and safety is having a fail safe or cut of switch that will go of if there is a problem.

When it comes to using copyrighted material, you can only use 20% of the hole piece unless you get a licensing from the copyright owner, you will still need to say copyrighted material you are using with the licensing.

Modern multi camera production VS Historical methods.

With historical multi camera production you would have lots of people working at the same time each doing their own thing but still working as a team, there would be someone ready to play a VT, someone would be stitching cameras and some adding effects.

With modern multi camera production we have moved lost of task in to one for example the vision mixer will now play VTs, switch between cameras and sources from instructions, apply digital effects during broadcast and combine images while on air ensuring a smooth transition all using a vision mixing console it the past this would have all been done by different people, but thanks to new technology like the tricaster. Can all be done by one person, witch is much better.

The main common ground that modern and historical methods use are still having one person on sound, one person on timing, one person on autocue and one person directing.

In the past there would be no viral studio or live green screen, everything would have need to physically because they did not have power full computers do live green screen. As computers got more power full they could do live green screen but the back ground had to be premade. Now that we have power full computers we can do live green screen and move around a viral studio in real time.

In the future I see less people being need for multi camera production, for example robots of tracks and AI being used to move the cameras with just one person tell each robot what to track and follow. I also feel that the job rolls of autocue and sound leveling for the mic could be put into one roll, but this could just make a supper stressful job witch would be bad.

Overall the main changes to multi camera productions have been new technology means needing less people and less people means lower cost and less space for mistakes, this is all good because lower cost means that you can have more shows in progress at the same time with smaller teams.
