PLANNING AND RESEARCH
Building from my context page stating my Maze idea, I then began exploring different themes and ideas in the below mind map.
Initial Brainstorm - Maze Theme

Theme
Maze

From my research into mazes I have found that it is clear where to start and where to end. The traditional view of mazes are that they are made from hedges. I have also found that simple mazes work for opening levels because you are introducing players to the mechanics and don't want to overwhelm them to begin.
Adventure Game Research

I want to include adventure elements. From my research into adventure games I have found that all of that game start with some one telling you what to do and how to win the game. i have also found that the start of a adventure game start of in an easy level.
Puzzle Game Research

from my research into puzzle games i have found that each game will tell you what needs to be done to move on to the next puzzle. i have also found that puzzle game have a hint button if you get stuck.

what sounds that i can use.
here is a mined map of sound i think would be good to use.

lines that will be recorded.
here are some of the lines that will be in the game.

"i shod take my phone before i go."

"i choose to not understand these signs."

"this is a strange place for a camp site."

"ho look i found a key"

"it looks like i need a key to open this."

"am i lost?"

"have i been here before?"

"i have found my way out of the maze."

"looks like i need to jump."
storyboard.
this is my storyboard of event that will happen and in order they will happen.

here are some concepts of what some of the items in my game will look like.

this is what the fire stone could look like
in the image i have also put some ideas of what the symbol on the fire stone could look like.
in my game the fire stone is what the player is trying to find.

this is what the key could look like.
in the image i have done 7 different keys.
there is a fire key, a normal key, a pirat key and a sun key. one of the keys will be used to open a door in the maze.

this is what the house could look like.
in the image there is a floor plan for the house and some out side views of the house. the player will start the level in the house.

this is what the temple could look like.
the image is set at the end of the maze. you can also see the hole the player will fall in to in the game you will not see this till you fall in to it.

this is what the phone could look like.
in the game the phone will be a 3d model that can be picked up and used as a map.
narrative breakdown.
before the game starts the person that you will play as has spent 5 years looking for an item. the item that the person is looking for is named the fire stone. the person that you play as found some text on a wall in a different temple, the text on the wall said about a grate monster that would come to life in the year 2012 and the only thing that could stop i is a power full stone that gives the user a fire ability. the person that you play as has set up a house next to the temple with the fire stone in it. after this point the game starts.

after my level.
after the player has comped my level the player will go into the temple in the temple there will be more puzzles and item to find as well as keys and doors to open at the end of the game the player will find the fire stone, but when the player picks it up a boss fight will start. the boss will be a sand monster that will spit fire at the player. to beat the boss the player will need to hit the sand monster with fire till it is made of glass. when the player beats the boss it will crash into a wall and the temple will start to crumble the player will then have to run as the walls fall when the play gets out of the temple they will be put back in the maze for the last puzzle. it will be the same maze but it will be destroyed. when the player gets back to the house the end screen will come up.

prototyping.
here is a prototype of my game.

in this prototype i am working on changing levels, setting timers, setting a camera and playing an animation.

in this prototype i am working on a mini map, an animation for the map, i am testing a title screen, i am prototyping a menu for the end of the game, i am also prototyping the house and the inside of the house i have also put in a lights.

in this prototype i am working on a key that can be sued to open a door. if the player was to go up to the door before getting the key i will not open and i will tell the player to get a key. when the player gets the key the door will say press e to open and when the player presses E it will open. i have also mad a flow that will drop went a player stands on it. i have made it so that you can't jump to safety by the place meant of the trigger box. and the invisible walls.
this is my floor for my level.

this is the floor plan of the level in the floor plan it shows where the player can go and where the invisible walls are the invisible walls are to stop the player from going into the woods.
in the floor plan it shows the lay out of the maze it also shows where the key and locked door can be found as well as the campsite.
it also shows the starting house and where i will be and where the maze will be from the house.
PRIMARY RESEARCH
forms.
here is a link to a form that i sent to people.
this is what i found from the form.
from the people that did my form i found that 13 of 15 people like to play puzzle games. this means that people still like to play puzzle game.

i have also found that 13 of 15 people would play a maze game. this tells me that people would play my game.

i found that 11 of 14 people would want a birds eye view of the maze and only 2 of 14 people would want a first person view. i want the game to be first person but the people a asked want a birds eye view. for this i could put in a mini map of the maze.

i have asked people what would stop you from getting lost in a maze? here are some of the responses i got.

knowing where the end is. i see how this can help people to do this i can make the end temple big so that you can see it from all areas of the map.

lots of trees. in the game i was planing to put trees in it but now i think i need tall trees.

Being able to see the maze from a birds eye view. to add this i can add a mini map that will show the player where they are in a small are.

Clues. if i was going to add clues i can use random item that will point the way.

this is my table pitch of the game.
h
SECONDARY RESEARCH
what other games are there.
the over game i will be looking at game for google play store and games you can buy in shops.

in the game pac-man you play as a yellow circle that is named pac-man. the gole of the game is to eat all of the dots in a maze. in the maze there are 4 ghost that will try to stop you. this is a popular game with remakes that are played to day. this game lets you see the hole map at once with a birds eye view. this lets you see where every thing is in the maze. in my game i will not be putting enemies in the maze because it is going to be first person and people will just walk in then.

3D Maze / Labyrinth this game from the google play store. this game has over 10,000,000 installs and was last updated on November 4, 2018. this game has a 3.4 start rating. in this game you get to see the maze at the start when you start the maze it starts a time so that you can see how fast you did the maze. the game is a third person game where you can see over the walls. in this game it lets the play jump to see more of the map. i think i shod put this in my game to let the player see parts of the map.

Epic Maze 3D this game from the google play store. it has 100,000 installs and was last updated on august 3 2016. it has 3.9 stars. from the video on google play it dose not show you the maze before you start. all of the texture in game game are the same and it looks easy to get lost. the game is first person and you can not jump to see the map. the only thing in the maze to stop you from passing the same spot are not knowing is the traps and enemies that are put in the map. in my game i do not want the play to get lost to do this i can put items in the maze.

temple run.
temple run is a Platform game where you start in a temple and you run from some monster there is no end to the game you just keep ruing to get a good score as you run you can collect coins to buy power up to use. the temple in this game is set in a swamp when you start you will be ruing on a stone walk way as you go it can change to rocks or to a wood path.
the obstetrical in the game are trees on the path, fire, pits to fall into and nets. for my game i think a will use the same style on path at the start to make the walls of my maze. i can also use the start where the player comes out as inspiration for the entrance of the temple in my game.

lego indiana jones.
lego indiana jones is a lego game based of the movie indiana jones. in the indiana jones movies it follow the indiana jones as he look for artefacts. this is the same in the lego game. in the lego game you are in a jungle for most of it. in this jungle you can find stone walls and in the stone walls you can find faces carved into the walls. i think if i use normal maps a can create the same effect. in lego game there are a lot of items to find in each level. to find the item you need to build or brake lego. i do not think i need a way to build but i could add a way to brake thinks.
for example a wall could be broken to get the key.

where can i find sounds?
my game will start in the woods and the player will go into a maze. i need to find out what sound to use. to find out what sound i will need i will need to go out side into a forest.

in the forest i heard the trees shaking in the wind, the birds cheeping in the trees and the wind. if i use all 3 of the sound i have found i can make a back ground audio and not use a song.

walking sound. i will need a sound for when the player is walking about the level. to get this sound i can walk about and record it then edit it if it is not good to make it better.
what will i need to know of unreal engine.
before i start using unreal engine i will need to know how to:
-
mini map.
-
set a camera as the player view.
-
how to change level.
-
how to setup ui

how can i find out.
to set up a mini map i can use a this you tube video.
to set the player camera i can use this video.
to change level i can use this video.
legal and ethical problems.
the legal problems i will come across are:
-
copy righted texture.
-
copy righted music.

the ethical problems i will come across are:
-
some one can get offed by some thing in the game.

how can i get around the problems.
to get around the legal problems i can:
use texture that are not copy righted.
to take photos.
use audio that dose not have cop right on it.
record sounds.
to get around the ethical problems i can:
try not to put any thing that would offend people.
i can check with over people that there is nothing offence in the game.

textures.
what textures maps can i add to make it better.
the textures maps i can use are:
-
normal map
-
opacity map
-
specularity map

what do the textures maps do?
a normal map can be used to make a 2d textures look 3d. it can also be used to make low poly model look high poly.

a opacity map is used to remove the back ground from a textures this is used for leaves and over plants

a specularity map is used to add a shine to an object. this can be seen when a light is moved past it.

Environment Research
The Woods
What can be found in the woods?
In the woods you can find:
-
tall trees.
-
grass.
-
dirt tracks.
-
plants.

what plans are there in Mexicans forest.
in the Mexican forest you can find:
tall Trees.
ferns.
bromeliads.
orchids.

how can i make the plants.
to make the plants i can use a plan with a leaves texture on it i can also put a opacity map to remove the back ground from the texture. i can also use this for grass.

how can i make the trees.
to make trees i can use a cylinder with a bark texture on it. i can then use the plans with leaves texture to make leaves. i can also use smaller cylinder as branches.

how can i add grass.
to make the grass i can use After Effects to make an animation of the grass moving. i can this make it in to a image sequence to put in unreal engine. i will need to do the same for the opacity map.
to put the grass in unreal engine i can use the landscape tools to paint it on.

the maze.
what can be in the maze?
the maze is going to me out side the temple.
in the maze the player will see:
-
stone walls with holes.
-
rocks.
-
plants.
-
the temple.

what can i add to make it more challenging.
to make make the map more challenging i could:
make the maze bigger.
make walls that will move changing the map.
make sound that want to make the player thing they are going the right way when they are not.
what if a put traps in the maze?
i do not want to put traps in the maze. the only trap will be at the end with the fall. if i was to add traps to the level i could add:
rocks that fall around the play.
spike that will be in the walls.
holes that will open up under the play.
a water trap that will brake the phone.
w

Research over game models.
i need to make some new trees that look good and do not make my game lag. i need to look for a game with a lot of trees and a big map. the i have found to look at is Fortnite. i will be looking at the way that they have made there trees.
here is a side by side of my old tree and the Fortnite tree i am looking at.
my tree Fortnite tree

from looking at the Fortnite i have made a trees like the a tree found in Fortnite this is what it look like.

i like the new trees i have made, i can place a lot of them with out lagging the game. with the old trees i could only place 6 trees before it would start to lag. whit this new trees i can place a lot more.
